Class of 1896
George Kochenderfer spent a year in college at Columbus, after which he took up
newspaper work, holding the position of city editor of the Galion Inquirer for several years. In 1901 he
was elected justice of the peace of Polk Township, which office he held for three years. He was then
associated in the book and wall paper business with U.E. Campbell for about a year and a half. In 1905 he
went to Mansfield where he has since been employed on the reportorial staff of the Mansfield News.
Wm. Curtis Laughbaum taught school a year after graduating then spent four years in Wittenberg
College, graduating in 1901 with the degree of A.B. He took three years in Theology at Wittenberg
Seminary, graduating in 1904 with the degree of B.D., and later at the college commencement was given
the degree of A.M. He organized a Lutheran church at Lorain, Ohio, in 1903. He also organized the
Springfield Lutheran charge in 1904 and served there two years. He is pastor of the Lutheran church at
Nevada, Ohio since June 1, 1906. He was a prominent athlete and singer in college.
Cora Sherrod attended Business college in Bucyrus, Ohio, also in Galion, and afterwards taught in the
Galion Business college. She was later employed in Mr. Metheany’s office until her marriage to Mr.
Mengel with whom she resided in Bucyrus until October 1905 when they went west. Spent a short time in
California after which they went to El Paso, Mexico, their present residence.
Elmer Harmon was assistant cashier in the Galion National Bank and was later employed by the Union
Lumber Co. in Portland, Oregon.
Bertha Hackedorn attended Miss Phelp’s school at Columbus, engaged in Kindergarten work for a time
and resides at present with her mother in Galion.
May McWhorter resides in Galion.
Grace Sponhauer married Mr. Connors and lives in Galion.
Kate Baldinger married Mr. Reed and lives in Crestline, O.
Myrtle Ness is living in Cleveland, O.
Bertha Block married Mr. Bradfield and lives in Columbus, O.
George Wemple married Mr. Lloyd DeGolley and resides in Marion, O.
Nella Neff married Mr. Herndon and lives in Galion.
Ethel Reardon is married. Nothing could be ascertained as to her present residence.
J. George Austin is traveling Auditor of the Erie Railroad with headquarters at Youngstown, Ohio.
Fred Helfrich is carriage trimmer and dealer in truck, Galion, O.
W.V. Goshorn graduated from Wooster college, was employed in the Governor’s
office at Columbus for some time. He is now editor of the Galion Inquirer.
Floyd Davis is employed by the Erie as transfer clerk.
Henry Davis was engaged in the jewelry business at Galion and Mt. Gilead for some time and is now
located at Fremont, Ohio.
Jennie Davis taught in the Galion schools for a number of years. She married Dr. Bland of Bellevue.
Emeline Simon died some years after graduation.
