SHELBY, OH – Walking tours highlighting some of Oakland Cemetery’s most famous residents will be conducted Oct. 5 as a fundraiser for the Richland County – Shelby Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The 10 a.m. tour, which will take 1.5 hours, will cover the entire cemetery, including the more interesting headstones and mausoleums, the old Wilson-May addition in the back of the cemetery, the Seltzer graves, and the indigent Potters Field, in addition to the graves covered in the afternoon tour.
The 4:30 p.m. tour lasts one hour and covers the front portion of the cemetery, including the Cockley, Skiles, and Fish monuments, as well as some of Shelby’s early settlers and military veterans.
Cost of the tours is $15 for the morning tour and $10 for the afternoon tour. Tours must be booked in advance at shelbyohiohistory.org and are limited to 15 participants for each tour.
Tours will be conducted by local genealogist and historian Christina Yetzer Drain. Oakland Cemetery is located on South Gamble Street in Shelby, Ohio. The tours are conducted over mostly level terrain, although actual gravesites may be on hilly unlevel grass. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water to drink.
