The original document the below came from is part of the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society’s Church Collection and is dated April 12, 2012, but there is not a date of when the document was written.


Harmony was organized part of Bucyrus Circuit Conference the Circuit previously known as the Crawford Circuit & Broken Sword Circuit. March 6, 1909 p. 59 from Microfilm Copy – There was a resolution the death by H. J. SHUPP on the death of Brother Samuel SHUPP:  whereas it has been the good pleasure of the Almighty God, during the past quarter to remove our bellowed Father and Brother Rev. Samuel SHUPP from earthly toil and pain care to the home of the triumphant in faith, therefore: Resolved that we recognize in Brother SHUPP a true servant of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ; a man of modest & retiring disposition yet bold for the right; a man of strong faith and simple trust, devoted in life and fervent in prayer; a man of earnest religious convictions, and a purpose of mend to carry them out.  Resolved: That in his death, we have lost a faithful and efficient co-worker; his family an affectionate husband and father, the church a loyal and unwearied member and the community a kind and accommodating neighbor and friend.  There was another paragraph and gives sympathy to Sister SHUPP, his widow.

The History of HARMONY EVANGELICAL CHURCH located in Holmes Tp., Crawford Co. Oh on the Tiffin Rd, four miles from Bucyrus on the West side of the road was purchased April 5, 1898 from the English Lutheran people for the use and benefit of the Evangelical Association Church of North America.

The church site was located and the original structure was built in 1870 at a cost of 1800. for a number of the Lutheran people who had a good flourishing society and Sunday School.  In the course of the years, some of their people moved away, others died until there was no regular preaching for the last eight to ten year, and later no preaching at all.  There was no church within a radius of three miles or thereabouts, and the Lutheran people in the neighborhood, along with others, desired that the church be bought and a society be organized.  In compliance with that desire and seeing the need of a church in the neighborhood, in behalf of The Evangelical Assoc., J.H.C. BERGER, purchased the building Apr 5, 1898 and began at once to take subscription to pay for the church and repair of the same, including belfry and bell.

May 11, 1898 members of Emmanuel Class of Bucyrus Circuit Ohio Conference of The Evangelical Assoc. met in the church to elect a Board of Trustees for Harmony Church.  The object of the meeting was stated by the pastor H.C. BERGER after which the ballot was cast and three following elected Trustees Term of three years. Albert MECK, John OREWILER & Elmer ANTHONY, now called HARMONY CHURCH.  June 12, 1898 organized Sunday School, Supt. Albert MECK, Assistant Jennings SHAWK, Miss Jenny LINN Sec, Miss STREMMEL, organist, George DREXEL, Treas.  At the first session one hundred were present.  The Harmony Class organized Jul. 22, 1898 with membership, 16, and two more added before close of conference year,  Elmer ANTHONY Class Leader, Albert A. MECK, exhorter.
