The Brokensword Evangelical Church, located in Crawford County, Ohio, celebrated its centennial in September 1936, marking 100 years since its founding in 1836. The church began with just seven members, organized by Rev. Henry Bucks and Rev. George Sager in a local schoolhouse. Early worship took place in homes, outdoors, and later in a log church built in 1842. Over the years, the congregation constructed three church buildings, with the current structure dedicated in 1906.

The church’s history is deeply rooted in the pioneer spirit, with early members enduring significant hardships to establish a place of worship and community. Families such as the Shupps, Aumillers, and Millers played foundational roles. The church was known for its “Circuit Rider” preachers, camp meetings, and strong missionary focus, sponsoring the creation of other local congregations.

Throughout its history, Brokensword Evangelical Church has been a center for spiritual growth, education, and social gathering. The Sunday School, established in the 1860s, became a vital part of church life, teaching both children and adults. Music and singing, initially in German and without instruments, were integral to worship.

The centennial celebration in 1936 featured a week of special services, historical reflections, and community gatherings, drawing former members and descendants from afar. The church has produced numerous ministers and Christian workers, reflecting its ongoing legacy of faith and service.

Today, Brokensword Evangelical Church stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of its founders and members, continuing its mission of worship, fellowship, and outreach into the future.
