The Crawford County Chapter of the Oho Genealogical Society turns 50 this year!

To celebrate the longevity of our organization, we will be posting articles from our inaugural newsletters over the next few months.

The message below was originally published in Volume 2, Issue 1 of the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society Newsletter in February 1976.

The Crawford County Chapter of OGS, has made it their mission to preserve records for family researchers since our inception 50 years ago. Here’s the message from the President from 1976 working with BGSU to preserve county records.

We began our new year as the Crawford County Genealogical Society expecting to receive the Old Crawford County Records in a very short time. Sorry to say, I still have no definite answer for an exact date we can expect to acquire the old records or how many we can have.
The County Commissioners tell me it all depends on the individual Office holder just which records we will be allowed to have. Also, it is up to that Official when he or she is ready to dispose of the records; they could even have a county truck take the records away without further notice to anyone, at the end of the 60 day period, March 20, 1976.
I have writtent o Ann Bowers, the representative of the Ohio Historical Society, who made the evaluation for the County Records Commission, asking her to assist us in obtaining as many of these old records as possible. I have personally asked each Office Holder for their old records, asking to be notified when they are
ready to dispose of their records. To each of you that so generously offered to transport the records to Mansfield, we may have to get in touch with you on short notice when, or if, we get a call that they are ready to dispose of their particular list of records.
Needless to say, I have not abandoned the project, nor will I leave a single stone unturned in order to reach our goal and successfully obtain our precious "Old Records".
Thanks to all of you for your support and willing assistance. I do hope to have good news before the end of the 60 days.

Grand, Grand good news!
Ann Bowers of Bowling Green (Ohio Historical Society answered my letter with a telephone call. She said that we will have no problem getting the records.
She has already sent to Columbus for the forms and as soon as they are received, she will call and come from Bowling Green to Bucyrus. She will go through all the records with me and representatives of our Society. The records already designated for the Archives will be taken to Bowling Green for preservation and microfilming. They will still be considered Crawford County records and will be accessible to us at the Bowling Green Center, (we are
part of that district). The remainder of the records we may have except for those of confidential nature.
I have also visited the room at O.G.S. for our storage of the records. It is nice and dry, and very large. It is also relatively accessible to carry the records to it.
I have further asked Ann Bowers if she could come, or recommend someone who could come to our March 18 meeting and explain the proper way to abstract "our" records.
