Plankton United Methodist Church Brief History

The below document is in the Crawford County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society Church Records Collection.

Plankton United Methodist Church

In the spring of 1897, in order to establish Methodism more fully in the Plankton Community, it was decided to build a new church there. And the church known as the Lykens Society, about 1 1/2 miles east, was at a low ebb.

The Lykens Society was part of the Sycamore Circuit at this time. The minister, assisted by others, made plans for the building of the new church. The site was donated by P. J. Thompson. The financial part was taken care of by circulating papers through the community. This was so successful that by the time of dedication, December 19, 1897, all claims had been met.

The original building had the entrance in the middle of the east end and the pulpit at the west end. In 1908 the Sunday School was added; the building was rearranged, putting the pulpit in the east end and adding the rear entrance.

During the years 1936-1941 the three branches of Methodism united and the Plankton Methodist Episcopal Church became the Plankton Methodist. In 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren united with the Methodist, and again the name changed to Plankton United Methodist. The church has seen four of its people become ministers.

Many changes have taken place in the church building to modernize it and to keep pace with the times. Our ministers and lay people have labored faithfully to keep the church a symbol of God’s love in the community.
